How to become a great teacher with 6 simple steps?
I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.
― John Steinbeck
Steinbeck’s words are profound. While certain people have great knowledge and talent, only those who understand the concept of teaching can fully grasp the art of teaching. My teaching mediums will be the human mind and spirit. Through art, I will facilitate the educational growth of students. Every human mind and spirit come in a variance of shape and style. Students need to be academically challenged in order to be at their best. Teaching art will enable me to encourage students to adapt and grow and to learn about history, life, and emotion through that art. I hope to be that inspirational art teacher who develops these skills in my students, and I hope to help those that matter most - our students.
One of the most important steps in becoming a teacher is to gain far-reaching experience which includes working with students in a combination of modalities and backgrounds. I will be culturally sensitive to students from different backgrounds. It’s imperative to find ways to connect with all students in a world that is familiar to them by connecting subject matter to their prior experience when possible.
An important step, in becoming that great art teacher, will be building a relationship with students that allows them to feel safe and supported. I will develop a relationship that allows students the ability to come to me if there is any educational problem or concern. I will have an open-door policy and if there is something, I cannot fix, I will find ways to help them by using other resources to get them the help they need.
A great teacher also demonstrates public relation, communication, and interpersonal skills when working with his or her students, other students, faculty, administration and parents. With these three key skills I will be able to get authentic feedback and at times even criticism to continue to be victorious in the classroom.
A profound teacher has strong classroom management skills and has the ability to organize and prioritize the workload. I want to learn how to manage student behaviors and classroom routines to maximize learning and create a positive learning environment for all of my students.
An accomplished teacher is able to perfect learning strategies when working with students to inspire active learners. With one on one, small group, or whole class instruction the information needs to be presented in ways that are easily understood by using diagrams, pictures, short texts and various examples, to help students master a subject along with its concepts without being overwhelmed. I will use different approaches when working with students with different educational backgrounds. To be that great art teacher I will incorporate a wide range of activities, manipulatives and cooperative learning projects. I will also be willing to adapt my curriculum and change my teaching methods should my approach need modifying.
In essence, a great teacher instills a sense of appreciation for education, while at the same time teaching students to have creative and critically thinking minds. I want to foster a fun learning environment, and help students blossom into well rounded individuals.
Most importantly, the job of a great teacher, is to prepare students for successful futures. I hope to facilitate an environment that fosters higher educational goals. Students who are reluctant to pursue higher education through college or university studies may find success in alternative ways through the trades or by earning certificates. I want to encourage them to be the best they can be with whatever profession or career they choose.
That to me, is what it means to be the best teacher.
